  26.             The CAOS/CAMM Center is the Dutch National Expertise  center
  27.             for   Computer  Assisted  Chemistry,  funded  by  the  Dutch
  28.             National Science Foundation NWO. It is an Academic  Institu-
  29.             tion and it offers chemists an elaborate package of software
  30.             tools, for remote use on a "central" computer system.
  31.  
  32.             The emphasis is  on  easy  accessibility,  achieved  by  the
  33.             application of menu controlled front-ends and interfaces and
  34.             on integration of the various tools and data bases. An exam-
  35.             ple of the latter is the interconversion of molecular struc-
  36.             ture files between structural databases,  modeling  software
  37.             and  computational  chemistry programs.  All available tools
  38.             are presented to the user in a hierarchy  of  simple  menus,
  39.             where the tools are arranged according to their application.
  40.             The Center supports its users through a combination  of  on-
  41.             line    Help   facilities,   practical   courses   and   the
  42.             (re)production of manuals.  E-mail facilities, NEWS and Con-
  43.             ferencing systems are used to improve the exchange of infor-
  44.             mation  and  experience  among  the  users,  including   the
  45.             Center's picstaff.

  47.             All tools and programs are arranged  in  packages,  covering
  48.             four major chemical areas:

  67.                A:  CAOS (Computer Assisted Organic Synthesis)
  68.                    Available tools are Reaction  Retrieval  Systems  and
  69.                    Fine directories and Synthesis Planning programs.

  71.                B:  CAMM (Computer Assisted Molecular Modeling)
  72.                    Available tools are 3-D Structural data bases  and  a
  73.                    variety of modeling programs.

  75.                C:  CompChem (Computational Chemistry)
  76.                    Available tools are Advanced modeling programs, visu-
  77.                    alization  tools,  the  quantum  chemistry literature
  78.                    database and computational tools for  both  Molecular
  79.                    Mechanics/Dynamics and Quantum Chemical calculations.

  81.                D:  Area   CAMMSA   (Computer   Assisted   Macromolecular
  82.                    Sequence Analysis; BioInformatics)
  83.                    Available tools are all major nucleic acid  and  pro-
  84.                    tein  sequence  data bases and programs for data base
  85.                    query  and  retrieval,  homology  searching,  protein
  86.                    analysis, nucleic acid analysis, alignment and phylo-
  87.                    geny construction.

  89.             Expert help is available on each of the systems supported by
  90.             the  Center.   All  data  bases  supported by the Center are
  91.             updated on a daily,  weekly,  monthly  or  quarterly  basis,
  92.             dependent  on the rate with which new material is being pro-
  93.             duced and available. User interaction with  the  tools  sup-
  94.             plied  is fully structure oriented whenever applicable, i.e.
  95.             most input is by means of structural formulas to be drawn on
  96.             the  screen and output is structure oriented where appropri-
  97.             ate.

  99.             It is the Center's policy to provide users with all documen-
  100.             tation that is available with a program or data base, and to
  101.             complement this information with on-line  Help,  with  extra
  102.             manual and "introductions" where necessary and with document
  103.             files  in  a  central  document  directory  from  which  all
  104.             material can be down loaded.

  106.             _N_e_t_w_o_r_k _A_c_c_e_s_s

  108.             Access to the Center is possible in many different ways. The
  109.             route  to be chosen will depend on a user's local situation.
  110.             Many routes connect to the Center's terminal  servers  which
  111.             will distribute incoming calls over the available resources.
  112.

  114.                            nection  from a local VAX in The Netherlands.

  130.                            Internet.  (In principle world wide).

  143.                            is  slower  than  routes 1 and 2 because they
  144.                            use a 9.6 kb PAD. On response  from  the  PAD
  145.                            answer with a <return> to connect to a termi-
  146.                            nal server which will  prompt  with  <Local>.
  147.                            Type  C(onnect)  CAOS  in response to be con-
  148.                            nected to one of the Center's nodes.

  150.             _W_h_o _C_a_n _U_s_e _T_h_e _R_e_s_o_u_r_c_e

  152.             Use of the Center's  resources  is  open  for  all  chemists
  153.             employed by Dutch Chemical Research institutions, and as far
  154.             as the Center's resources allow, for users outside  Holland.
  155.             Currently sufficient resources available.

  157.             Access is only possible at a  subscription  basis.  Requests
  158.             for  a  Userid  and a Password should be mailed to the above
  159.             e-mail address.

  161.             A subscription includes:

  163.                o+  a maximum of 2 simultaneous interactive processes

  165.                o+  free use of all CAOS/CAMM utilities for  e-mail,  NEWS
  166.                   bulletin boards, downloading, plotting, etc.

  168.                o+  10 MB free disk space (additional space will cost Hfl.
  169.                   500,- per 5 MB/year).

  204.             of 25%, as do Academic Institutions abroad.  For  commercial
  205.             companies,  individual licenses have to be negotiated on the
  206.             basis of each software tool requested.
